HAIRSPRAY - THE MUSICAL
Following the tremendously successful youth production last July of the Broadway musical “Hairspray” by Malibu’s own Once Upon a Time Theater, which featured the incredible talents of so many local kids, Paula Mae Schwartz and the Malibu Playhouse have graciously offered to reprise the show for new audiences this fall. Winner of 10 Tony Awards, including best Musical, “Hairspray” tells the story of dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad in 1960’s Baltimore, who auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” (Baltimore’s home-grown version of “American Bandstand). She becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion, and uses her new status as a teen sensation to topple Corny’s reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show. Tremendous songs, offbeat characters, witty dialogue, great dance numbers, and strong underlying themes of tolerance and inclusiveness have made this show resonate with audiences everywhere since it was first produced on Broadway in 2002.
